Helianthemum oelandicum var. oelandicum
1340 Helianthemum oelandicum (L.) DC.
This variable, mainly European species is restricted to open, rocky areas. The distribution is distrupted as a result of unsuccessful competition with the forest vegetation during the postglacial time. Some of these isolated areas are represented by special subspecies, five in number according to Fl. Eur. 2/1968, p. 289. H. oelandicum s. str. is restricted to Öland (S. Sweden). The earlier distribution is illustrated by several pollen finds in late-glacial layers of S. Scandinavia and C. Europe indicating a more continuous occurrence (cf. Hultén, Atlas 1971, map 1243). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 288.
