This boreal-montane species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 94 and map 85). Subsp. columbianum (Rydb.) Hult. in the Pacific region and mountains of E. Asia and western N. America and var. modestum (Diels) Cuf. in the SW. Chinese mountains are mapped separately.

Syn.: G. trifidum L. var. pusillum A. Gray.

This arctic-montane species is restricted to Iceland, Greenland and N. America. The mappirrg differs, however, considerably from Porsild and Cody 1980, map 992. A southern counterpart in eastern N. America is G. brevipes Fern. & Wieg., also mapped here.
