495 Carex livida (Wahlenb.) W illd.

This mainly boreal species occurs in N. Europe, N. America and eastemmost Asia. It is reported among the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 214 and map 196). The few scattered occurrences known hitherto in Siberia seem to indicate a circumpolar distribution in earlier times. In the southern part of the American range the taller var. grayana (Dew.) Fem. is distinguished.
