This somewhat variable species is mainly restricted to Europe but is represented by var. manschurica Kom. in E. Asia and replaced by C. monana Raf. In SE. North America. It has also been introduced into N. America. Thus it may now be regarded as an amphi-atlantic plant (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 258 and map 240).
