This species s. lat. has originally a wide Eurasiatic distribution. The species s. str. is considered to originate from SE. Europe and W. Asia from where it is widely spread over most of Europe (in Fennoscandia mainly along the seashores) and to parts of N. Africa, N. and S. America. Mapped separately are the Asiatic subspecies japonica (Miq.) N. Busch, jacutensis N. Busch and oblongata (DC.) N. Busch and also the closely related species costata C. A. Mey. in W. and C. Asia.
