This species originates from the Mediterranean region and probably parts of C. Europe. It is widely cultivated in gardens and has spread far beyond its natura! distribution area, for instance to the N. European countries, N. America, Tasmania and New Zealand. The occurrences in SW. Europe and NW. Africa probably belong to M. tournefortiana L. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 282.
