This variable, mainly boreal species occurs in most of Europe and eastern and western N. America. Thus, it belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 62 and map 43). The isolated occurrences in Asia seem to be certain and of relict character (as are those in the Caucasus and S of the Caspian Sea). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 78.
