This species s. lat. is indigenous mainly in Europe. In Fl. Eur. 2/1968, p. 75 f., six subspecies are recorded, with the approximate distribution of each. Further, the closely related C turkestanica Pojark is mapped. C monogyna has been introduced, for instance into N. America. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 210.
