1223 Ononis spinosa L.

This polymorphic, mainly Eurasiatic species is here represented by subsp. spinosa in Europe and adjacent parts of W. Asia, subsp. antiquorum (L.) Arc. in S. Europe and subsp. leiosperma (Boiss.) Sirj. In S. Europe and eastwards, the latter two subspecies S of the braken line on the map. In C. Europe subsp. austriaca (G. Beck) Gams occurs. See Fl. Eur. 2/1968, p. 147. The species has been spread by man to several localities, for instance in Fennoscandia (subsp. spinosa). It is also reported to occur occasionally in N. America (Fernald, Manual 1950, p. 894).
