1537 Calystegia sepium (L.) R. Br.

This polymorphic and widespread species forms an "unusually complicated complex of closely related taxa" (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 282). In S. Europe subsp. sylvatica (Kit.) Maire also occurs, which, however, grows as an escapee from gardens farther to the north. The approximate range of C pellita (Ledeb.) G. Don, occurring originally in C. and E. Asia, and its hybrids with C sepium is also marked. The species s. lat. belongs to the discontinuous circumpolar plants (op. cit. p. 282, 395 and map 273). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 358.
