This originally European and partly W. Asiatic species is cultivated as an ornamental tree beyond its natura! distribution area, for instance northwards in Fennoscandia, westwards in France, England etc., eastwards in S. Kazakhstan and in parts of N. America. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 277.
