This species is widely but disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and N. America. A few lower taxa are distinguished, int. al. subsp. purpureum (Vill.) Murb. It occurs in approximately the southern half of Europe, together with subsp. robertianum. The species is reported as native in E. Asia and eastern N. America but probably introduced in the western states. It has been introduced for instance into S. Africa, S. America and New Zealand. It belongs to the discontinuous circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 202 and map 193). Cf. world map in Meusel et al. 1978, p. 262.
