418 Cladium mariscus (L.) R. Br.

This polymorphic and widespread species occurs as subsp. mariscus in Europe (except extreme N) and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia, towards the south also var. martii (Roem. & Schult.) Kuk. In southern N. America and the West Indies and in E. and SE. Asia as well as in other tropical areas subsp. jamaicense (Cr.) Kuk. is distinguished. A counterpart in eastern N. America to the European Cladium is C mariscoides. (Muehl.) Torr. These two species have together an amphi-atlantic distribution (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 274 and map 256).
