This arctic-montane species s. lat. has a wide, disjunct distribution. Besides the population in Europe and on E. Greenland (subsp. glacialis), subsp. chamissonis (Schlecht.) Hult. in E. Asia and Alaska is mapped. Subsp. glacialis belongs to the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 92 and map 73). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 167.
