This species is considered to originate from Asia. As it is cultivated (subsp. hortensis), it is spread over large areas (even outside the marked area) and occurs as a weed (as well as subsp. nitens [Schkuhr] Pons, see no. 690) in Europe, W. Asia and N. America. The map is incomplete in many respects.
