Within this arctic-montane species s. lat. several taxa are distinguished in Eurasia and N. America, each one with its particular distribution pattern (for Europe cf. Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 317, for the rest of the Holarctic see, int. al., the comments in Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 118). The species s. str. is amphiatlantic (1. cit.), but, including closely related taxa, it has a circumpolar distribution. The mapping follows mainly Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 71.
