This rather variable species has a wide, disjunct distribution. The occurrence in Newfoundland is uncertain. The populations in Himalaya and other mountains towards the east and in E. and SE. Asia are distinguished as subsp. alta (Boott.) Kiik. and subsp. rochebruni (Franch. & Sav.) Kiik., respectively. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 69.
