This mainly arctic-montane species occurs in Eurasia and N. America. On the whole the distribution is circumpolar but disjunct (as far as is known at present). However, it is reported among the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 232 and map 214). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 64. It also occurs in S. America (from Ecuador to Tierra del Fuego and Falkland Is.). Thus it must be considered as a bipolar species (Du Rietz in Acta phyt. Suec. 13/1940, p. 216).
