This species is mainly arctic, in Asia and N. America arctic-montane. The arctic populations have been named subsp. tundricola (Schljakov) Löve & Löve, while the rest in C. Asia may be called subsp. nummularia. The occurrences in N. Scandinavia are considered to be hybrids between subsp. tundricola and S. herbacea (cf. Hultén, Atlas 1971, map 577).
