Within this widespread species s. lat. two subspecies are distinguished, viz. subsp. aleppicum in Eurasia and subsp. strictum (Ait.) Clausen in N. America. The species s. lat. belongs to the discontinuous circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 178 and map 169). Subsp. aleppicum has been introduced into same places in Fennoscandia and SE. Asia, S.
