As this section consists of about 60 taxa (species and lower taxa) and as the taxonomy must be considered as intricate, it is not possible to present here a complete mapping of each taxon. For detailed studies see literature on special geographical groups of taxa, for instance the survey of the Fennoscandian taxa by Nordhagen in Bergens Mus. Årb. 1931 and the maps in Hultén's Atlas 1971. For northern N. America see Porsild and Cody 1980, maps p. 337. The section Scapiflora has a circumpolar distribution.
