1033 Saxifraga oppositifolia L. subsp. oppositifolia
This arctic-montane subspecies of S. oppositifolia is very variable, especially in the montane parts of the range. In the C. and S. European mountains several lower taxa are distinguished (Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 377; Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 328). The subsp. oppositifolia has a wide, almost circumpolar but disjunct distribution. On E. Greenland var. nathorstii Dusen (probably an allotetraploid of a hybrid between S. aizoides and S. oppositifolia) occurs together with the parent species. The population in the C. Asiatic mountains is distinguished as subsp. asiatica Hayek) Engl. & Irmsch. The E. Asiatic and N. American subsp. glandulisepala Hult. and subsp. smalliana (Engl. & Irmsch.) Hult. with a probably disjunct distribution in northwestern N. America are presented on a separate map (no. 1034). The two maps (nos. 1033 and 1034) are complementary to each other, showing the total, circumpolar range of S. oppositifolia s. lat. (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 328 and map 62).
