This variable species has a disjunct distribution in the mountains of E. Russia and C. and E. Asia. Three closely related species are also mapped, viz. S. mollis Smith in Caucasus and Asia Minor, S. carpathica Rchb. in the Carpathian Mts. and S. exilis Steph. (syn.: S. radiata Small) in E. Asia and northwestern N. America.
