This variable, Eurasiatic species is also reported from several places outside the map area, even from C. and S. America (Cuba, Chile). They are indicated in the margin of the map. In Japan the species occurs as var. japonicum Milde. The distribution of the closely related E. debile Roxb., also classified as subsp. debile (Roxb.) Hauke, in SE. Asia is roughly indicated on the map. Earlier this species was mapped by Meusel et al. (1965, map p. 7) in its total range, by Pichi-Sermolli (Lav. Soc. ltal. Biogeogr., N. S., 1/1970, map 3) do., including E. debile, by Hultén in Atlas 1971, map 16, for NW. Europe (only three localities in Balticum, two possibly introduced and one extinct), and for Europe entire in Atlas Fl. Eur. 1/1972, map 31.
